Q. I have a dual-boot system with Win98/Win2000 operating
systems on separate hard drives on my computer. Is there
a way I can access programs such as Quicken 99 that
is on the Win98 drive without having to restart the
computer when I'm using Win2000?
|
|
A. You can Copy a shortcut to Quicken 99 on the Win2000
desktop. One-way to do this is to boot in Win98 and
right-click on a Quicken shortcut either on your desktop
or in the Start > Programs list. Now, click on 'Copy'.
Double-click on the My Computer icon. Double-click on
the hard drive that has the Win2000 operating system.
In Windows Explorer click on the plus (+) sign beside
Desktop in the left panel; right-click in an open space
in the right panel and select Paste to place a copy
of the shortcut on the Win2000 desktop.
Restart the computer in Win2000; double-click on the
new shortcut. You'll get three error messages about
.dll files it can't find. As each message comes up,
do a StartàSearch and type in the filename.dll.
(The .dll will be located in the Win98 Windows\System
folder.) Right click on the filename and click on Copy.
In Win2000, Start > Explore > Windows > System,
click on Edit on the menu bar and Paste the file into
the System folder. Repeat this process for the other
two files that Win2000 doesn't have. After each copy/paste,
double click on the shortcut to try out the program.
After the third file is copied, Quicken 99 should be
operable from the Win2000 shortcut.

Q. How can I access Word 97 document files on the Win98
drive from Word 2000 in Win2000 so I don't have two
file cabinets with duplicate folders?
|
|
A. You can create a shortcut in the Win2000 My Documents
folder to the Win98 My Documents so that you can easily
get to your previous documents and save your new documents
there also. Open Win2000 My Documents, click on the
down arrow point to the right of Address: and double-click
on Win98 drive. Right-click on the My Documents folder
and click on Copy. Click on Back, click on Edit and
Paste Shortcut. Word 97 and Word 2000 are very compatible
so there shouldn't be any problems.

Note: Either of the
above techniques for creating shortcuts can be used for
either problem.

Q. I'm having trouble getting my CD-RW drive to eject
the CD after I've put on files.
|
|
A. In Roxio's EZ CD Creator 5.0 select Make a Data
CD > Direct CD. On the Direct CD Format Utility,
select Eject. The CD will be ejected and you'll see
a statement that says, "The CD you just ejected
from drive (X:) is readable in all CD-R/CD-RW drives
and MultiRead CD-ROM drives."
