Q. What is the Clipboard?

A. The Clipboard is a place in temporary memory where an image is held when either the Copy command or the Cut command is used. Right clicking on an image and clicking Copy from the menu, selecting images and/or text and pressing Ctrl C, or selecting text and clicking on Edit > Copy are three ways of executing the Copy command. The image can be Pasted once or as many times as you wish into different documents, cards, etc. until the computer is shut down.

Q. How can I see what's on the clipboard?

A. Follow the path Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Clipboard Viewer to see what's on the clipboard. A shortcut to the Clipboard Viewer can be placed in the Quick Launch toolbar next to the Start button by right clicking on the Viewer, holding down the right mouse button and dragging to the toolbar. Let up on the image and click on Make Shortcut Here.

Q. Can I have more than one copy at a time on the clipboard?

A. All Windows versions let you copy one item at a time to the clipboard. It stays there until you copy another selection or the computer is shut down. However, if you have MS Office 2000, you can have as many as 12 items on the clipboard at once. With MS Office XP, you can have up to 24 items at one time.

When more than one item is on the clipboard, there are options to Paste All, Delete All or paste an individual item. Moving the pointer over a copied item shows what is there and any item can be pasted in any order or as many times as you wish.

Q. When a bunch of windows is open and I want to shut down, is it necessary to close each window one at a time?

No, in MS Office, holding down the Shift key and clicking on File gives options to Close All and Save All that don't appear otherwise on the File menu. Shortcut icons to Close or Close All files can be placed on the Standard toolbar by clicking on Tools > Customize > Commands tab, then click and drag the icon for the selected command to the toolbar.

*If left or right mouse click is not designated, left click.
