Minutes of ICON'S Meeting November 21, 2002

President Terry Roberts called the monthly meeting to order at 1:00 p.m. at The Library Center. A special welcome was extended to new members and visitors. Terry announced that ICON's Secretary, Bill Patrick, and committee chairpersons Faye Patrick, Dick and Nancy Preffitt were in Las Vegas attending the annual meeting of APCUG (Association of Personal Computer User Groups) and the fall COMDEX. ICON is a member of APCUG, and COMDEX is the computer industry's largest expo. We look forward to their sharing what they learned with us at our December meeting.

Terry also made the following announcements:

  • ICON has finally obtained an external CD-RW drive so we will be able to use the Library's high-speed Internet connection to download large programs and/or updates and put them on a CD for you to take home.

  • ICON's Holiday Party will be December 28th, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Old Country Buffet on South Glenstone in the Glen Isle Shopping Center/ Tickets are $.50 each, available at any ICON function prior to the party. Dinner is all you can eat Dutch treat (about $6.99).

  • Don't forget about our promotional brochures available for you to hand out to friends and acquaintances that might be interested in joining ICON.

  • We also have our Free for Review Software available. Sign up for that program with Charles Roberts

Treasurer Sarah Marshall gave a brief report.

Julie McAninch and Kelly Radford, both Banking Center Managers with Bank of America presented the program about online banking. They began their presentation by stating that more than a million people pay their bills online through bankofamerica.com.

Several ICON members inquired about the security of online banking. Ms. McAnninch said that Bank of America has a 100% security guarantee; she knows of no fraud problems with their online banking. Information is encrypted before it leaves your computer using SSL technology. The complete security guarantee is available on their web site. She also reminded us that each time we hand somebody a check, we are giving information about ourselves and our bank account; those checks pass through a lot of hands. Additionally, our social security numbers, dates of birth, and other personal information are often written on the checks. Finally, she said we should never allow Windows to save our password(s) to an online account, thereby giving anyone with access to the computer, access to the account.

Ms. McAninch used the web site to demonstrate other banking services available online, such as paying Bank of America credit cards and loans and viewing past statements. To view the information presented, go to http://www.bankofamerica.com and click on "Learn More" on the left menu.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Sarah Marshall (for our out-of-town secretary, Bill Patrick)
