Q. What happened to the Quick Launch toolbar in XP?

A. The Quick Launch toolbar by default is not turned on in Win XP, but it is there. Right click on an open space in the toolbar and left click beside Quick Launch to have it appear to the right of the Start button. The Quick Launch area is where you can drag an icon for quick one-click access to frequently used applications. Only four icons show; others are hidden. Besides Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, I have showing the icons for MS Word and the Clipboard Viewer--in XP, it is called Clipbook Viewer and it's located at C:\Windows\System32\clipbrd.exe.

Q. I'm using WinXP and my computer won't let me install programs.

A. Go to the Control Panel and click on User Accounts. Beneath each user's account, it will say either "Computer Administrator" or "Limited account". Programs can only be installed when you are logged in, or signed on, as a Computer Administrator. An account can be changed to either Administrator or Limited account by selecting Change an Account. This must also be done by the Computer Administrator.

Q. What are the options for user accounts?

A. There must always be one Computer Administrator; other accounts can be either type. The Computer Administrator has the privileges of creating, changing, or deleting accounts; making system changes; and installing programs and accessing all files.

A Limited account can use programs, have personal My Documents folder, have Internet access with personal Favorites list, change the picture beside the account name, and create, change or remove his/her own password to protect personal files and settings.

The Guest account when turned on, allows anyone without an account to use programs, access files not password protected, and access the Internet but they can't change computer settings.

The purpose of these different account types is to allow individual users security for their files and settings and the ability to customize the account.

Microsoft recommends logging onto the Internet with a Limited account because a limited account has no access to change system files, therefore it provides some protection against Trojan horse files which can reformat the hard drive and do other major destruction to your computer.
