PROGRAM NEWS AND REVIEWS

by Terry Roberts

ICON's May program featured guest speaker, Paul Duckworth, Collection Development Coordinator for The Springfield-Greene County Library District. Mr. Duckworth gave us a glimpse at the changes in a librarian's job since computers have become an everyday part of our lives, and he gave us a tour of the library's web site, showing us how to tap into the resources available to us from home, via our computers and the Internet. Computers have touched nearly every aspect of our lives, and the Internet provides immediate access to a tremendous wealth of resources unimaginable just a few short years ago. The Internet links Paul referenced during his presentation are available from ICON's web site on the "Monthly Program" page under "Links Related to the above Topic." Many thanks to Paul for sharing his view into the past, and future, of library science.

Everyone is invited to join us at 12:30 PM, on Saturday June 19th (Our regular meeting date) to help us celebrate ICON's 14th anniversary. In honor of this occasion, we will serve cake and ice cream in the patio, outside The Library Center Auditorium. Serving will begin at 12:30 PM, and continue until 1:00 PM, with our regular business meeting and program following immediately thereafter. Please arrive early so we can start the meeting on time.

Our June program will feature ICON's own David Oliver, showing us how to partition our hard drive using Partition Magic by Power Quest. There are several good reasons to partition a drive, including storage of back-ups and data separately from operating system and applications to facilitate easier backups, as well as, loading a different operating system so the machine can be set up for a dual boot.

David will also be demonstrating how to use another software program by Power Quest called Drive Image. This software creates an image of everything on the hard drive and has the ability to restore your entire hard drive in the event of a major malfunction.

You have all read Clarence Gault's articles in ICON's monthly newsletter about backing up your data, and this is one way to accomplish this, so don't miss this opportunity to learn more about how to maintain your computer and protect yourself from a catastrophic crash.

Corel Corporation is scheduled to provide us with a guest speaker in July, so mark your calendars now for this exciting event.
