Q. I received a CD of a relative's
wedding in a PowerPoint presentation but I can't view it because
I don't have PowerPoint. What can I do?
|
|
A. Microsoft has a free downloadable PowerPoint Viewer that
will allow you to view presentations made with PowerPoint
97 or later. To download your version, go to http://tinyurl.com/6b6g5
.
|
Q. All my jpg pictures are
opening in MS Paint and I want them to open in the Windows Picture
& Fax Viewer. How can I change the program that opens my
pictures?
|
| A. Right click on the picture
file for a menu. Click on Open With and click on Windows Picture
& Fax Viewer. The picture will open in the chosen program.
Other options are given depending on the programs you have on
your computer.
Another way is to click on Tools > Folder Options >
File Types tab. Scroll down the list of file extension types
to JPG (for example), click on JPG to see what program it
opens with and click on the Change button. Now the Open With
window is open and you may select a different program if you
wish. The above procedures work for other file types besides
graphics.

Q. How do I get my computer
to run programs that ran in earlier versions of Windows?
|
| A. Windows XP has what's
called Compatibility modes that let you run programs written
for Win 95, Win 98/ME, Win NT 4.0 (SP5) and Win 2000. There
are also options for Display Settings: Run in 256 colors, Run
in 640X480 screen resolution, and Disable visual themes. To
use these options follow the path: Start'All Programs, locate
the program name. Right click on the program name; click on
Properties. Put a checkmark by clicking in the box beside: Run
this program in compatibility mode for
and select the
Windows version you need.
Personally, I like being able to see at a glance what I've
got, but to turn off this feature and save a bit of disk space
you can: Click the Start > Control Panel > Folder Options
> View tab Click Advanced Settings, check "Do not
cache thumbnails", and click OK.
