ICON members answered the Springfield-Greene County Library’s call for help during the early “Dog Days” of summer. The Library’s 30-ft. air-conditioned mobile computer lab was parked in the Ozark Empire Fair’s new KidZone during the fair’s 10-day run. ICON members assisted children who came to play games on the computers, aided librarians in printing and distributing digital photos taken with Leo the Library Lion, and touted the benefits of ICON to adults. Fairgoers, ICON members, and librarians alike, were grateful for the air-conditioned bus and the respite from the heat it provided. Thanks go to those members who contributed to the effort; each of you made a difference! Many of you worked multiple shifts, and several offered to work “whenever needed”. THANK YOU.
Traffic in the KidZone was somewhat less than had been hoped, and the Library’s outreach at the fair is being evaluated to determine the best way to reach the most people next year! ICON will stand ready to assist again in whatever way it can. Success is not always measured by numbers, of course, and as ICON’s Terry Roberts stated, “It was a great way for a number of librarians to get to know a number of ICON members!”
Speaking of numbers, here they are:
10 – Number of days ICON members worked at the fair
20 – Number of ICON volunteers
35 – Number of shifts staffed by ICON members
92 – Number of hours ICON volunteers worked (not counting overlapping shifts!)
