Q. How do I lighten a picture that’s too dark using Adobe Photoshop Elements?

A. I opened the picture on the left below in Photoshop Elements with File—Open and located the picture. Then Enhance—Adjust Lighting—Shadows/Highlights. Lighten Shadows by default lightens 50% with a slider bar. I moved the slider bar for Darken Highlights to 50% and got the results in the picture on the right. Isn’t Faye pretty sitting next to OTC?

Q. What does “crop” mean in photo editing terms?

A. Crop means to cut away unwanted space around a subject. Example: Below, the picture of Dona and Mary on the right has been cropped to the picture on the left.

Q. What do I do if I make a mess of a photo when I’m trying to edit it?

A. Before you do ANY editing on a photo, make a copy and do the editing on the copy. If you’re using Photoshop Elements 3.0, click on File—Duplicate to make a copy. Close the original. You can make copies of copies, so when you’ve accomplished something you want to keep, Save the file, make another Duplicate, and work on that one. Ctrl Z is the Undo keyboard shortcut in most editors and it will usually undo several steps back.
