"IT'S OVER MY HEAD"

by Mary Phillips

I think the problem is in acquiring the language of computerez and the solution is in a progression of learning experiences, and this is what I’m suggesting:

  1. Basic computer classes with Bill & Faye Patrick or Betty Spence (a series of five 90-minute classes plus an all-day session on using the Internet,) provide a basic overview of computer skills. Register for these through St. John’s Seniors (841-0333), or call Bill Patrick if you’re not a senior (866-1234).

  2. Reinforcement in individual components of computer skills, mouse handling, keyboarding, Internet, and the Library’s Online Catalog in The Edge classes held at the Midtown Carnegie Library. These classes last two hours and are listed in Bookends Library News & Calendar of Events. Midtown has an excellent lab of 12 student computers running the Windows XP operating system. Register for these classes by calling 837-5011.

  3. More Reinforcement – Check out the tutorial CDs and DVDs in ICON’S library, which we now have available on all meeting dates. And check out the self-paced tutorial CDs that Midtown Carnegie has available for computer basics, word processing, files and folders and Microsoft programs including Internet Explorer, Word, Access, Excel, Publisher, Outlook, PowerPoint and FrontPage. You might be interested in only one or two tutorials, but by the time you’ve worked your way through one, you’ll be familiar enough with the language that you’ll feel much more comfortable asking questions at the SIGS and you’ll understand most of the discussion.

  4. Intermediate and Advanced instruction can come in the computer classes offered at Ozarks Technical Community College (OTC). There are fees for most courses, but if you’re age 60+ you can enroll in the VIP Continuing Education program, which allows you to take classes without paying the registration fee after the class has enough people enrolled to pay for the class. There may be lab fees that are required. Call OTC’s Continuing Education Center (447-8888).

  5. More Advanced -- Teach a class or lead a SIG. Someone said, “The teacher learns as much by teaching as the students learn by participating.” This is so true! At any time, you may assist Bill or Betty in the Basic computer classes and you’ll learn there, also.

Happy Computing,

Mary
