“Open source” is the name given to software that is free and available to anyone who wants to use it, modify it, or add to it. Many people believe that supporting open source is the best/only way to push Microsoft to improve their products.
Linux is the open source GUI (Graphical User Interface) for the UNIX (also open source) operating system, widely used for Web servers and business networks.
ICON’S August 19th program will be presented by George Schmoele, software engineer and owner of Springfield Technology. George is a firm believer that we benefit from using Linux instead of Windows. Don’t miss his presentation: “Linux for Windows Users.” He’ll tell you why you should explore Linux and how to do so without risk to your Windows PC.
Mick Topping’s class for August 22nd is entitled “RSS, Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary?” This is another HOT topic in emergent Web technologies. If you would like to get news headlines about topics that interest you delivered to your Internet home page, don’t miss this opportunity to learn how! Mick will teach you how to sign up for “news feeds” and how to use them. This class will be held on Tuesday, August 22nd, from 9:00 a.m. ‘til 3:00 p.m. at The Library Center (Meeting Room B). Registration is required. Call The Library Center (874-8110) to reserve your seat.
Don’t forget that September is picnic time for ICON! We will meet in the pavilion at Silver Springs Park on Saturday, September 16th, from 11:00 a.m. ‘til 3:00 p.m. This year we have arranged special entertainment! ICON member Donna DeJong has agreed to play her musical saw while I “attempt” to play her washtub bass to keep rhythm for her ;-). All musicians, of any skill level, are encouraged to help us carry a tune in a bucket! If you play guitar, Jews Harp, Kazoo, or some other semi-musical instrument, please contact me so we can coordinate this fun-filled day!
See you there,
Terry
