This is the long, sad saga of how Juno has added more gray to my hair. On Sunday, I opened Juno to get to my Internet sites file. Faye needs her newsletter articles on time! Depending on how long I play on each site I check, it can take me a L-O-N-G time to write it.
Juno opened, sort of, but kept saying it was checking my e-mail folders. So I did what I always do for problems: Turned off the computer – even though I had just turned it on. Tried again – same thing.
I went to the Juno site and downloaded the program. It said I could reinstall over my current one, correct the problem, and save my folders. That was optimistic! I installed the new copy, but still got the same error message. At one point or another, I made a backup copy of my e-mail files.
I had to write the article, so I did it on my laptop and sent it to Faye. Thank God for people in the group who give me suggestions for sites!
I then decided that I’d give up my address book and files, delete the entire program, and start fresh. Guess what! Because of these same e-mail folders, Windows was unable to remove the Juno file!
I was sort of berserk by this time, so I watched TV and did the crossword puzzle in the newspaper. When I awoke this morning, something in my brain clicked and I pulled out information I’m sure was stored there from one of the many ICON functions I’ve attended over the years. I went to “My Computer,” the “C” drive, opened the “Programs Folder,” found Juno, and CLICKED THE RENAME FILE BUTTON! It is now Corrupt Juno Files. I even deleted the icon off the desktop.
Then I downloaded a fresh copy which installed itself, just like Juno wanted it to, in a brand-new file, and I have e-mail again! I don’t have my address book or ICON sites, or recipes and sewing things, but I’ll live and will gather more.
My computer is fast again – it had been slowing down big-time and I hadn’t taken the time to do scary things to see what the problem was. Two problems solved!
The moral of this story – if there is one – is to give up computers immediately! No – that's not it. Something that you hear today which has no bearing on anything you need to know today, will lodge itself in your brain and rescue you in the future! Keep coming to meetings even if you don’t really understand what’s going on, and one day it will become clear – or at least less muddy.
