A. To check it out, besides my AT&T account, I set up free email accounts at juno.com, hotmail.com, yahoo.com, aol.com, and gmail.com webmail. All were almost identical when it came to opening an attachment.
Opening an attachment in an email:
- Click on the underlined filename with the paperclip beside it and you should see a message similar to “No virus threat detected File: Web sites to visit.rtf Download File.
- Click on Download File; a window will open with "Do you want to Open or Save this file?"
- Click on Save.
- Click on My Documents in the left column. At the top of the window where it says: Save in: it should now say My Documents -- that's the correct place to be. The File name: should be Web sites to visit.rtf, and the Save as type: Rich text format (*.rtf).
- Change the Save as type by clicking the down arrow point and select (by clicking) Word document. Remove the .rtf from the file name.
- Create a new folder by clicking on the folder with the star/pompom on the corner, name it Web sites (or other appropriate name), and click OK.
- Now Save in: should say Web sites (folder name), the File name: should remain the same Web site to visit.rtf, and Save as type: Word document (*.doc). Click the Save button.
The file should open at this point, but also be available whenever you follow the path Start--My Documents, double click to open the folder Web sites, and double click to open the file Web sites to visit.doc.
- Position your pointer on the underlined blue web address link (hyperlink), hold down the Ctrl key and click to go directly from Word to the selected website. This feature is available in MS Word, but not in WordPad; that's why I had you change the file type. If you are using Open Office 2, don’t hold down Ctrl, just click to go to the web.
The few differences I found were:
- Hotmail had a message “Attachments, pictures, and links in the message have been blocked for your safety. Would you like to unblock the content of the message?” You’ll need to click on OK.
- Juno – Scroll down below the text message and below an icon representing the file and click on the filename.
- Gmail – There are three choices: View as HTML (a webpage), Open as a Google document, and Download. Both the HTML and Download provide live hyperlinks to the websites, but the Google word processor doesn’t.
If you’re using an email client like Outlook Express or Outlook, double-click on the Subject to open the message, then double-click in the name of the attachment in the Attach box above the message, and click the Open button.
